Summer Olympic Games in 1940 was canceled due to the then ongoing World War II. The games were scheduled to go to Helsinki in Finland. Originally it was planned that the games would go in Tokyo, Japan, but with the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 the games were moved to Helsinki, who came second in the poll.
After being a showcase branch at the 1936 Summer Olympics would gliding become a separate Olympic event in 1940 and the glider type DFS Olympia Meise was constructed for the purpose, but the plans have since the games were set never materialized. Helsinki Olympic Stadium that had been done since 1938, however, came into use in Finnkampen 1940 where even Germany was the third participating nation, alongside Sweden and Finland.
Although the planned Olympic Summer Games 1944 in London were canceled because of the war, as well as the planned Winter Games in 1940 and 1944. 1948 Summer Olympics in London was instead the first Summer Olympics after the war. Helsinki arranged later 1952 Summer Olympics and Tokyo in 1964.
